Growing sunflowers was much more nerve-wracking than I thought it would've been. We went through a mild drought, leaving me worried the flowers would die; I was proven wrong by their resilience. Some of them curled or looked a little different, and one broke under the weight of one of the flower heads. Despite this, they still bloomed. They stood tall. No worse for wear, they soaked up the sunshine all the same. I couldn't help but be reminded of Ukraine and the struggle of its people and children, why I was growing these flowers in the first place. Beautiful things will experience struggle nonetheless, but nothing can diminish that beauty or ruin the spirit to keep fighting to see the sun.

Although we are unable to mail seeds out of the country, your participation in the Sunflower Seed Initiative would be greatly valued. You can educate yourself on the needs of orphans in Ukraine. You can share this site with your friends around the world. You could fill out the form below. We would love to dialogue with you. And you can give directly to Lifesong For Orphans towards the Trauma Care Center they are constructing in western Ukraine. All such giving is strictly confidential. The Sunflower Seed Initiative is never told who gave what.
